INTRODUCTION

Ultrasound: Basics & Principles is the first stage of an ultrasound development course based on the principles of ‘spaced learning’.

This online course is for doctors, dentists and nurses who are in aesthetic practice, and are considering using the new hand held Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) equipment.

This provides an introduction to the basic principles and covers the history, physics and applications of ultrasound. The introductory VLE on ultrasound basics and safety consists of 6 lessons. Work your way through and then attend an online webchat with the Trainers (available every 6-8 weeks) to discuss and explore the introduction course in detail, and ask about anything you need to know on your requirements for clinical use.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand the basic physics of ultrasound and the physics specific to hand held ultrasound
  2. Be aware of interaction of ultrasound with tissues
  3. Understand the different transducers and frequencies used
  4. Understand the different modes in ultrasound
  5. Safety and regulatory uses of ultrasound

The second stage will be a hands-on session using an ultrasound scanner to practice identification of structures and explore in detail the uses of ultrasound in practice. This session is face-to-face with the trainers for practitioners to use their own handheld device to gain more experience in its function.

The third stage will be a scientific injectable session where the ultrasound scanner will be used to look at specific regions and inject under ultrasound guidance. Complications and identification of displaced products will be examined as well as skills of using this to deal with complications.
